The existence of good reservoirs and good seal formations, discovered during hydrocarbon exploration, lead to its selection as the first unit from Romanian continental plateau to be assessed for CO2 storage potential in deep saline aquifers. The assessment revealed the potential reservoir and seal formations for CO2 storage and three potential CO2 storage sites, Iris, Lotus and Tomis, located on the southern flank of the depression.
