The need to accommodate the growing population on the one hand and the presence of a vulnerable coast in the other, endanger the area, in particular the eastern part of the bay. Here there are a multitude of sandy beaches supported by a highly vulnerable dune system, and subject to marked erosion during the last decades. Considered as one of the largest metropolitan city in the Maghreb, Algiers is subject to intensive urbanization. The occupation of its coastal area has taken place in several steps/periods of time/episodes and has gradually occurred at the expense of many dune areas (mobile or consolidated), which caused a negative impact on the natural sediment supply of the neighbouring beaches. This work aims to highlight, through a multi-temporal monitoring of the „East Algiers“ coastal area, and allows to establish a diagnosis of the possible cause-effect relations between intensive urbanisation, the decrease of dune areas and the loss of beaches, in order to offer a better understanding of the coastal geosystem of Algiers and to support future decision making for a an optimal coastal protection of this sensitive area.
